One day down on the Farm

It was a fall of around about 1970 because we were chopping corn on the field that Dad had a habit of planting on the lowest (swamp) land on the farm in Granton Wisconsin. This fall was especally wet and Dad came up with this idea of how to get the chopper and wagon through the muck. Dad's idea was to have a carivan of three tractors chained together with the last tractor pulling the chopper and wagon. I was in the lead with the Ford-Fergerson, my brother was in the middle with the 8N Ford and my Dad was driving the chopper with the Yellow 40 Fergerson tractor. We were all doing great going through the muck with one tractor pulling the other, as one would start to get bogged down in the muck. Being that I was in the lead I felt that I needed to keep up the slack as best I could without getting stuck myself and try not cause all this progress to come to an end. I recall that we had just successfully completed chopping one row and were at the end of the field, the plan was then to turn back and start the process all over again, continuing this way until the wagon was filled with chopped corn. As I started to turn back down the field I got this bright idea to put the Ford Fergerson into a higher gear being that the 8N Ford and Ford Fergerson transmission were different and that I was most familiar with the 8N Ford I managed to put the Ford Fergerson perfectly into Reverse without the slightest resistance. You should of seen the look on my brother eyes as I proceeded to drive my rear-end with drawbar into the grill and radiator or the 8N Ford. Well, there was steam everywhere and my bother was visabiliy and emotionly upset. What struck me most about this situation was that my Dad did not show any anger or discuss, to this day I still do not know how he does it? I'm happy to say that Dad is still farming with his Ford Fergerson, 8N Ford and Yellow Fergerson at the spry age of 82. Time permitting I've got many a story of these wonderful tractors.
