Remembering custom baling

I just was reading the story about the young fellow and his dad doing custom baling and it jogged My memory. As a youngster going to high school I would work summers for a neighbor that rented My Uncles farm and He did custom baling just after the pickup balers came out. I started driving a Allis- Chalmers W C pulling the baler and had the same problem as the other fellow with the clutch on the W C it was a long reach for My short left leg and made it difficult to start off without just about doing a 'Wheelie' Needless to say that didn't please the Boss' as He was standing on the platform to feed the hay into the baler. On the rear of the baler We had a sled that a fellow rode and would stack about a dozen bales on the sled then stick a bar in the ground and they would slide off to be picked up later with a wagon or truck. The fellow was hired by the farmer that owned the hay and this time the fellow was a little 'Slow'. As I was going around the field I saw I could run over a bumble-bee's nest in the ground with one on rear tractor tires on the next pass and being a 'Smart eleck young kid' I did it. The bumble-bee's came fogging out of that nest and the guy on the sled got the worst of it, He jumped off the sled and was trying to hit them with the bale hook and was yelling and running. The Boss was very unhappy with Me as I was dieing laughing, I thought He would dock My pay but He didn't just gave Me a 'Tongue-lashing' big time, it made a impression on Me as was a learning thing and slowed Me down a lot. I wasn't near so smart after that, probally saved Me more grief later in life. He lives out west now days and I run into Him after 50 years at a grade-school reunion a few years ago and it brought a tear in My eye, I sure thought a lot of Glenn. Another thing the baler had a 4cyl wis. hand crank motor and I kept begging the Boss to let Me crank it once, finally He did but told Me to hang onto the crank as it would get away from Me and fly out, who knows where. Sure enough I let it get away from Me and it came flying out and went in the timber along side the field, so We had to go look for it, the Boss wasn't happy with Me again, now I wonder why He even kept Me working for Him.
