Patience Pays Off

Most of us folks have been restoring antique tractors for years, and, well know the benifits of having a little patience from time to time. For the Treasures we find, have for the most part, had quite a lot of patience waiting for us to come along! Along about 1993, I aquired a 35 Farmall F-12 from a friend of mine to put in line for restoration. It had the worst case of bad cut-offs on it, so I tended to wait for a good set of round spokes before I attempted to get the ball rolling on that one. The tractor kind of sat there in the way (as usual) for a couple of years, and on a Saturday morning I got my dog loaded (Rio) and a cooler of beer, and went on the usual quest for something new. I happened to stop in a small town 60 miles or so down the road,(Aspermont,Tx) to see an old friend of mine that ran a gas station. I asked him if he knew where any old tractors were. He said, BOY! there ain't no old tractors left in this country! Think you got em all! About that time another jent came in and heard the conversation. He said that he knew where one was out in the middle of no-where, and proceded to draw me a map. He told me the old man that owned it lived there within a hundred yards of it, and also that the old man was crazy. I went on my way, after thanking him of course, and found the place. A 1936 F-12 with perfect round spokes sat as a yard ornament! I went to the door and told the man that I was President of South Plains Antique Tractor Assn., and that I was interested in his tractor. He told me to go ahead and look at it, but the D*& Tractor wasn't for sale. I got the serial number and went back to talk to him, telling him it was a 36 model F-12. He had told me the tractor had been in the family since he was a kid. I then told him, that I just wanted him to know that if and when the tractor was for sale, I'd like to be the one to end up with it. Gave him a buisness card, and got almost back to the truck, when he yelled 'Boy, come here!' Soon as I got back up on the porch, he again reminded me the D*& Tractor wasn't for sale!!!!I told him that I knew it had been in the family for 60 years or so, that it probably couldn't be bought. He smiled, we said our goodbyes once again, and just when I opened the truck door, he yelled 'BOY,COME HERE!' Once again, I walked up to the house and knew by now the old man MUST BE CRAZY! He said,'boy I told you the best way I could, that that tractor is NOT FOR SALE!' Looking around and probably looking extremely puzzled as well, I didn't know exactly what to say, then the old man said 'but I didn't say a D*& thing about not giving it away! You just come get that tractor whenever you get ready', and smiled real big. You never know who you will be meeting on the course of life's trails, or who will make your day, and, sometimes, who will have fun with you as well. But, rest assured, patience is a good thing to have. Sometimes it is the best thing to have. There are a lot of good people out there, most of which have been raised in the old school, and that may be the best thing anyone of us can be proud of. By the way, in a week, when I went back for the tractor, he was still grinning! Take care, Jerry

Today's Featured Article - It Can't Be Done! - A Tractor Story - by Neil Campbell. I'll never forget the time back when I was a boy baling hay on our Farm in Big Rapid, Michigan. The most memorable event that took place was a trip up the steepest incline on the farm pulling an old New-Idea baler with a pony-motor for power and a haywagon. I had just talked my Dad into buying an old John Deere B with 6-speeds ahead and I was real proud of it, except it was a little smaller than the Case tractor that we normally ... [Read Article]
