William McKinnon, Wagonmaker | IN 1888 MY GRANDFATHER CAME FROM P.E.I. TO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST TO BE THE FIRST TO HAVE BUILT WAGONS FOR ALL OF THE 'BELLINGHAM BAY SETTLEMENT' AND ALL OF WHATCOM COUNTY. HE DID THIS FOR MANY YEARS AND WAS RESPECTED FOR HIS CRAFT. HE LATER ASK INTO HIS SHOP ON RAILROAD AVE(WHERE THE BAGELRY IS TODAY) IN WHICH THE ONLY EVIDENCE OF HIS SHOP IS 5 HORSESHOES EMBEDDED INTO THE SIDE WALK. HE MADE WAGONS AND BUGGIES UNTIL THE CAR CAME OUT AND OTHER FINE MACHINERYS. HE HAD HIS SECOND SHOP WHERE THE NORTHERN RAILWAY STATION IS TODAY AND THE THIRD AND LAST SHOP WAS ON STATE ST. HE THEN WENT INTO MAKING CARS AFTER HE HAD TO PART THEM TOGETHER AFTER THEY WERE SHIPED FROM OTHER STATES. HE WAS A GREAT MAN AND TO THIS DAY HIS GRANDSON WILLIAM MCKINNON STILL TELLS THE TALES OF DAYS GONE BY AND MY DEAR MOTHER TALKS ABOUT THOSE DAYS WHEN HE HAD HIS SHOPS.HIS SON WAS ALSO A WILLIAM MCKINNON AND HE WAS A PAINTER AND BIG BAND DRUMMER. THIS COUNTY IS SO RICH IN ALOT OF HISTORIES WITH DIFFERENT FAMILYS. I KNOW THIS IS A WEBSITE FOR MACHINERY ONLY BUT I HAD TO JUST WRITE A LINE OR TWO TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT I AM A DESCENDENT TO WILLIAM EDWIN MCKINNON AND HE DID MAKE ALOT OF QAULITY WAGONS WITH MR. KASTNER AND IF ANYONE WHO KNOWS WHERE I MAY FIND ONE OF THOSE WAGONS(AND I DO NOT CARE WHAT SHAPE IT IS IN) I WOULD BE FOREVER GRATEFUL. I CAN BE REACHED AT (360)5279858 AND ASK FOR DEBORAH ROGNESS OR LEAVE A MESSAGE AND I WILL RETURN YOUR CALL. YOU SEE WITH THE WAGONS HE MADE IT HELPED SHAPE WHATCOM COUNTY TO WHAT IT IS TODAY BEFORE TRACTORS. I HOPE SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE SOME PICTURES OR STORIES(THAT CAN BE PROVED) BECAUSE I AM DOING A BOOK ABOUT THE FEW SETTLERS IN AND AROUND BELLINGHAM THAT STAYED HERE AND HELPED SHAPE THIS COUNTY. SO YOU SEE THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT I FIND ANY THING TO DO WITH HIS WAGONS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. SINCERLY D. ROGNESS DESCENDENT TO WILLIAM E. MCKINNON ONE OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF THE BELLINGHAM BAY SETTLMENT deborah k rogness, wa, entered 2005-07-21 My Email Address: Not Displayed |
