Grandpas Accident | In 1946 my grandpa was fitting my fathers field using Pa's nearly new Allis Chalmers WD pulling a two row disk. The seat broke & grandpa fell backward & was run over. Pa & his brother hearing the tractor laboring ran to the field to see what was happening. The tractor was stuck in a ditch still churning away. Grandpa was squashed flat in the soft dirt. It would have klled an ordinary man but he was a big tough old retired farmer age 67. He was sent to the hospital with several broken bones plus large welts top to bottom. but no cuts. When I visited him he said the worst thing about the accident was when he hit the ground he swallowed a large cud of chewing tobacco. Made him deathly sick but cured a 55 year habit. He recovered but not completely. He lived another 6 years. During those yeas he could get around using a cane. Grandma said she noticed he made a lot of trips to the privy coming out swing his cane at the end of day. Might have had something to do with the bottle of Muscatel wine I would buy him when ever I could a couple of dollars together. Grandma knew very well what was going on after 50+ years of marriage.
