  • DEAR BRIAN I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED YOUR ARTICLE ON COUNTY TRACTORS. I HAVE A COUNTY FOUR DRIVE WHICH I AM RESTORING AT THE MOMENT AND I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ON THE BRAKE BAND TYPE CLUTCHES. KEEP UP THE GOOD STORIES I LOOK FORWARD TO THEM

  • I got started on Fordson Majors and Souper Majors when I was a young man in southern Ontario in 1969 by my friend Bernard Ransome . We both used these and County 4 @ 6,s in the cold rocky bushland of near north Ontario and southern at Bayfield. We have always rebuild and repaired both types. I have found the 2 wheel Fordson to be the toughest as I have never had any severe breakage to the frame. This was not the story in the County,s as I have put Loaders, backhoes, snowblers ete. and use them in construction. Remember to always put a frame from front to back for loader backhoe and for heavy front lift such as snowblowers and loaders 1" plate or frame to rear axle. I have learned the hard way| I had tough wiry semi-retired operator named Horst who was using a County 6 to move a large pile of clay. Now Horst was no mechanic but he was a hell of a worker and there was lots of people watching him.I was busy myself at differt place close by when he suddenly appeared rather excited. With a cigarete clenched in his mouth he announced Boss tractor brocken.I thinking this was a normal problem tried to consol him by telling him to cheer up it can't be that bad can it? He looked me in the eye and said in a very loud voice Tractor Broke IN Two.I went with him a yes there was the backhoe and drivers seat separated by 3ft. and only hydraulic lines attached to engine and loader! We have had 2 similiar episodes since in our 30 years of using these machines. We have leaned most'ly to diesel engines with a little in gas. Presently we run a County 4 with approx 85 hp. Also two County6's 90 and 140 hp. We have a # of spare parts and no other sources. Good Luck to others and remember that this Idea I believe; came also from Henry Ford. The Countys have also been used in remote tandom and under the English Channel with snorqels .They make me think with their tremedus traction that they would be very similiar to Mr.Porche land train.I was also told that Countys hauled tremendous loads of logs out of the hills of Quebec and was used for many years to clear roads of heavy snow 7 ft.not uncommon|In short I still think that they are one of the best ever built| Ken & Marie Hughes 519 482 7508----www.forrest@bmts.com In memory of Horst Schwerdtfeger
