  • Nice story on the Gibson D tractor. I have a model A and a D Gibson. I am currently restoring the D but I have noticed that this tractor was a yellow not the traditional grey. Were any of these tractors painted yellow? The paint is old and looks origional. Can anyone check the plate that the engine sets on and please let me know if the engine mounting holes ar closer to the front or the back. The plate mounts both ways and I am trying to save some work. The AEH engine described in the article was a six horse power engine not a nine horse. I could use a magnito plastic housing for my mag if anyone has one.

I searched throuhg the gibson club for a year and found nothing .i found a company that makes them to replace the orginal one . It is a Wyco magneto, easy to get parts for, now my carburator needs replacing and can't find one. I would like to here from some gibson owners . My e-mail is trahancs@bellsouth.net Again very good article ; Thanks, Carol, Church Point, La.

  • Wow! I'm so delighted to have found your website. I inherited a Gibson about 12 years ago. What a work horse! It ran well for several years. Then one day it quit; would not start for anything. Some people have suggested replacing the magneto. I would appreciate any advice and lead on parts or whatever to get this tractor running again.

  • A couple of corrections if I may. The engine was a 4 stroke not a "one cycle" and was a single cylinder. 5 HP not nine was common. They may have had 9, although I'm not aware of any. The company before its demise was bought out by the same company that owns Helene Curtis, the cosmetic company. The wheels, although they can be interchanged with the International, do require that the International wheel hubs be milled in order to fit the Gibson rims. One interesting fact that we found out was that the transmission gears on ours were the same as a Ford Model A car. Ours was Red, and it appeared to be the original color. • The gibson tractors were built as early as my grandfather's 1932 gibson 300. It was considerably larger than than the one in the photo in this article. The steering lever was on the right hand side, With linkage below the frame rail extending to the front axle. It had 24 inch tires on the rear and 12's on thr front. the original transmition had been replaced with a 1932 three speed chevy transmition. The ring and pinion had also been replaced. Acording to my dad the ring and pinion from a model ford was used in it,if any one happens to need those parts for a gibson restoration. In the early 70's sometime the rearend to frame bolts worked loose and wiped out the pinion bearing in the rearend, and instead of looking around for parts dad sold the tractor. For 50 bucks. That really pissed me off that dad would do that with granddad's gibson...

  • This was an exelent article. I was introduced to the Gibson Tractor when I was only 3. that was 1957. I remembered it was BIG and loud and I loved it! That was my grandfathers Gibson. I grew up with the tractor and must have hundreds of Gibson Hours. My grandfather bought the Gibson here in Washington State. We moved to oregon and ran a small farm with it. Here is what I know about my grandfathers Gibson. Engine was a David Bradley 9 or 10 horse (brigs and Stratton clone) and had a rectangular fuel tank not the oval one in this article picture. I remember the David Bradley written on the front housing of the motor. The drive was 4 v belts to a jackshaft which served as a clutch by loosening up the belts when you pushed the pedal in. the other end of the jackshaft was a sprocket and chain to a 38 Chevy 3 speed trans. It used a direct coupling to the rear end which I think my grandfather said was a dodge truck narrowed. I remember when we wore out the tires we put tire chains on and when they went bad my grandfather removed the rims off an old panel truck and we ran them to death. The tractor had horrible mechanical brakes so you would just drive it knowing it took a bit to stop. It had the blade, A plow, a spring tooth harrow, and a disc. I remember plowing 10 acres and how my shoulders would hurt from running the draw bar up and down and steering in soft dirt with the ol push pull. That tractor put the strong into armstrong! I would love to still have that tractor or another one..

  • Great picture with the article! Thank you. Our family has a Model D that I drove from the age of 10 ( I'm not telling you my age now). Every one of the six brothers has used it over the years; some even kept it up. Dad put calcium chloride solution in the rears to give weight and more traction with the added chains. Mud, snow, clay, and sand didn't stop it. Never had a leak, and never had a puncture. We have the front blade, rear plow, and rear rake. All have been used at one time or another. I found another D for free, and one of my brothers has it to refurb. Am looking for carbeurator specs/diagrams and engine diagrams. Anyone with info or a manual can contact me at mbige5160@comcast.net.

  • I operated one of these on our farm when I was about 10 and that was 57 years ago. All the good things said about it are true and I know as a lad that the sycle bar mower was a female dog to lift. It just had a lever conected to a cable and that was connected a 5' bar of steel plus blades and tines. It would plow like crazy and I prefered that to cutting hay, mabye because in was done in the cool spring verses the hot summer. We worked truck gardens of potatoes, sweet corn, tomatoes and a bunch more on our 20+ acre farm. I hated that my dad made me work then, but I really apreciate it now. I only think about the good things. Wow I forgot we had about a 5 acre orchard to. The Gibson was a hand full for a boy to pull start. I would put my one foot on the tire and pull with all I had. It saved dad from feeding a team of horses to 10 gallons of gas for maybe 15 cents a gallonI wish I had that thing today. Thanks to everyone who contributed.
