  • I have a 1948 Massey Row Crop that I'm restoring. I love the tractor and I'm about to go through the rear brakes. Any precautions before taking the axles & housing off? Thanks!

  • My dad's first tractor was a shiny new Massy Harris 22. It was one of the last ones made in about 1956. I can remember my dad telling of axles breaking when it was still quite new.

  • I have a 1948 MH 20 (very similar to the 22) that I use for boat launching in the summer. A great old tractor. I enjoyed your photos--you need stickers (or painted on like I did) graphics to identify that beauty! Thanks!

  • I also have a 1948 model restored and into restoreing a mustang now . did not have to go into the gears at all but had to replace the seals on both axle and was not to hard of a job. wish mine was a sdt.

  • Thanks for a great article, but I have to question the term "effective engineering." The common axle breakage problem mentioned in the article sounds like a design flaw. If it happens to half a dozen tractors, that's abuse or just plain bad luck. If it happens to 100 tractors, it's an engineering error. And locating screws where you can't get a wrench on them is inexcusable, especially when the fix is a simple homemade bracket. So the Massey Harris engineers of yesteryear did two things wrong on this model, but they probably did 10,000 things right. The fact that it's still around indicates it's probably a pretty good little tractor overall.

  • Hi, Was a MH repair guy for several years and had a Massey 81 and 22 for several years. In our area they were few and far between, but I never heard of a rear axle breaking. Must have been the way they were used. Different geographical areas have different breakage patterns, due to how the tractors are used in an area. Enjoyed reading about a rig that brings back lots of memories.

  • Our 22 broke an axle while pulling a mower clipping pasture. I think the axles were weak.

  • I was raised with a 22 rowcrop. I raked a lot of hay (custom farming) pluss our own 2000 to 3000 bails a year. The tractor also had a lot of hours on the brushog. The hay rake was a 3pt hitch J.D. I never did break any axles or any thing else on the 22 M. H.I started when I was eleven years old and was not the most careful of operators. Maybe I was just lucky.

  • Does anyone have an original picture of a Massey Harris 22?
Darrell wrote on Thursday, February 07, 2002 (PST):
  • Does anyone know where I could find new or used rear tires for a 22 Massey Harris? I'm finding they are quite rare. 10" x 34". I've just bought a 1953 model and it needs restoration work. However, it starts and runs like a charm and I'd like to get it mobile. Has one flat tire on rear. I've had little or no luck finding tires. Are they still made somewhere? Thanks so much for your help.

  • Can a Massey Harris #22 use a standard "modern" 3 point brush hog ? What does the MH-22 use as a "top link?" Thanx!

  • its very simple taking the axles out. i have a MH 20RC and the hubs were set all the way out so i took them off and got them pressed out (the press was as big as my 20) it took heat. the press jumped when it came loose. i also had to fix the brakes luckily we have a parts 81. they were the same thing just had diff govoners. the first 20s had the same gov.

  • Hi ! to Massey Harris fans, My 22 is STILL running strong-mostly to retrive firewood from the woods, It will go where others wont, By the way I had to make the belt pulley you see in the picture - 2 Chevette brake drums welded together worked fine - bolt holes lined up on the drive.Note for Bill you can find the year to match your numbers in an article posted by Yesterdays Tractors .

  • That was a good solution on the chute...your tractor looks larger than a "Pony" model...is it? Do the Pony hydraulics work ok on your rig? Thanks, Jim B.

  • I'm trying to replace rear axle bearings and seals on my 1950 Massey Harris 30. I have it broken down where I can see the seals but can't can't remove them. Do you have any advice that would help. Alos do you have to remove the complete axle to replace the seals. My axle is in great shape, I just need to replace seals and bearing because of an oil leak. Thank you.

  • I have a Massey22 no idea what year,I also had to do some repair on the rear seals, oil got to the disc brakes, still not 100% My latest problem is the water pump it s made to be rebuilt but the impeller shaft is so badly pitted that I need a new one or an alternative pump. The 4 cylinder continental engine was used on so many things that I m hoping someone can suggest where to get one,it s the one with the distributor on top,any hints

  • Hi I have a MH 22 GS Ser 6202 which has worked well for me pulling a bit of wood, plowing snow and grading the driveway. I have had some weak spark of late and intend to replace the voltage regulator, cap, rotor, points, plugs and wires. I have considered putting on a 12 volt kit. Has any one any comments about this project? I understand that I would keep the ignition as 6 volt and put in a voltage reducer. I have heard that autolite or Dodge parts are compatible with this system. Hank Hank

He may need other parts too, as he likes to repair those ole tractors. We live in central Mi. area, Please assist if your able. By the way looks good on your page, Great work.
