  • Bill, You and your Dad should be very proud of that Farmall B. Most of all, I think your Grandfather was right there with you during the restoration! Great story and thanks for sharing with us./ FB

  • I guess I don't realize that my 1940 Farmall A is an antique, I still use it on a daily bases for snow removeal and other work that needs to be done here in the yard. If any body out there needs parts for this great tractor just contact me, wildcat700@hotmail.com and I will see what I can find. I found out that there are a lot of farmalls in my area. When my tractor does break my dad and I always get it going some how.

  • I restored a 47 H Farmall that my dad bought in 1951. It had been setting out in a field unused for 10 years so it was in similar condition to yours.

  • I AM IN A SIMILAR SITUATION. MY WIFE AND I HAVE RECENTLY MOVED TO MY GRANDFATHER'S MICHIGAN HOUSE, 1400 MILES AWAY FROM OUR COLORADO HOME. THERE IS ONLY ABOUT 65 ACRES LEFT HERE OF WHAT USED TO BE MY GRANDFATHER'S FARM. PARKED IN ONE OF THE SHEDS FOR ABOUT 12 YEARS WAS MY GRANDPA'S, BOUGHT NEW IN 1952, FARMALL SUPER "M". THIS WAS SOMETHING TO SEE AS I HAD REMEMBERED ALL THE STORIES MY FATHER USED TO TELL US OF HIS FARMING AND CUSTOM COMBINING DAYS AS A KID WHILE USING THIS SUPER "M". THE TRACTOR HAD BEEN UNDERMINED BY A WOODCHUCK CAVERN AND HAD SUNKEN INTO THE EARTH FLOOR UP TO ITS AXLES, FRONT AND REAR. AFTER SOME WORK I HAD EXTRICATED THE TRACTOR FROM ITS HOLE. I DRUG IT TO THE WORKSHOP WHERE AFTER A BATTERY, FRESH GAS AND A SOAKING OF SOME WD40 IN THE SPARKPLUG HOLES SHE STARTED RIGHT UP. WHAT A THRILL TO HERE HER PURR. THE TRACTOR IS USED QUITE OFTEN THESE DAYS. IN FACT, WE USED IT LAST YEAR TO PULL TREES, PLOW, DISC, PLANT AND CULTIVATE TWO SMALL FOOD PLOTS OF CORN FOR THE DEER AND OTHER WILDLIFE IN THE AREA. IM PRETTY SURE I'D LIKE TO RESTORE MY GRANDPA'S SUPER "M" MYSELF, BUT I'M IN THE TOOLS AQUISITION MODE RIGHT NOW. I CAN'T SANDBLAST OR PAINT FOR LACK OF THE RIGHT TOOLS. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PROJECT. IF ANYONE HAS ANY HELPFUL COMMENTS OR TIPS, THEY WILL BE DEEPLY APPRECIATED. RUPPKEV@MI.FREEI.NET

  • Nice Story, What did you do about the cracked block and where did you get your repair parts, please? My neighbor has one with the same problem and it is just sitting there. Maybe I want to make him an offer and fix it. Thanks, Mark

  • Nice going...another one saved from the scrap heap. I always enjoy a good restoration story and an "in the family" tractor makes the story even better. Not only that, I'm glad to see another "goodwin" in the hobby. I've messed with old iron for 50 fine years. Geo. Goodwin

  • in 2000 my dad found a 1939 B in a barn in NEW JERSEY the lady said they got it in new in 39 and due to a death it had been in that old barn since 1941. its been restored and only does show work these days . everything is 100% with working lift and two hill plows on the rear. i have been told it may be the finest one out their.

  • Glad to see you and your dad are spending time working on tractors and getting along! Before I caught the tractor bug myself (I'm 34), I helped my dad rebuild the engine in his 8N...definitely not the most fun I've ever had. I'd like to revive the man who invented the flathead engine, just so I could kill him again! =) All kidding aside, it was a learning experience for me AND him, and I'm sure we'll be wrenching together for the next project. Not like we're lacking for projects...just up to my dear ol' dad to tell my what our next one is! =) Pat

  • You are a very fortunate son. I wish I had the oppertunity to do something like that with my dad. He passed away and I miss him.
Carlton Grambo wrote on Saturday, November 26, 2005 (PST):
  • I was born in 1948 but the first tractor I remember is the "B". Dad traded a w-30 and the B in for the Oliver 77 in 53 or 54. I think even if my brothers and I love the good green one, Dad was always red in a way. Good luck and many happy hours with your B.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract. ... [Read Article]
