John Deere 4020 - Featured Tractor

The John Deere 4020 model tractor was produced in 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972 in Waterloo, Iowa and Mexico. It has a 404 ci engine rated at 101 horsepower.

  • JD 4020 Front Wheel Bearings - Brought a '64 4020 D with loader home about a month ago. Runs strong, tight, seems like a good piece. A minor item or two: Seeing some wobble in front wheels. Not substantial, but visible. Just replace bearing sets or entire hub? Not seeing any movement in steering linkage or tie rods. Fuel gauge doesn't work.   • 4020 power steering - A friend has a 4020 diesel that has the front wheels (wide front) turn sharply to the left upon starting. After a few minutes running and moving the steering wheel back and forth the wheels can be brought back to center and work correctly. I haven't done any checking to find the trouble as I'm not really a 4020 mechanic, but I can follow directions from someone who knows what might be causing this. This is a hobby tractor that just sits most of its recent life or has been on tractor drives.
