I use both. Craigslist is more like a thrifty shopper classifieds. People are looking for something local and usually for pretty cheap. Ebay is more of an online store and the prices people pay are usually higher because of that. If I have a product that I think will have widespread appeal, like a walk behind snowblower, riding mower etc I usually use craigslist. If I have something that has more of a specialty market I use eBay.

Some examples...

I had a snowblower for the front of a Case garden tractor on craigslist for $225. I got one nibble from a guy who said if I sold it to him for $100 he would come pick it up right away. I put it on eBay at a fixed price of $250 and sold it to a guy who is driving from the middle of Michigan to pick it up.

I had a John Deere 208 garden tractor that is pretty rare as they were only made for 2 years. I posted it on lawn and garden forums that I frequent for $200. Not so much as a nibble. I put it on eBay and had 9 people watching it and sold it for $237.

Craigslist in my opinion is great for selling stuff like washers and dryers or household furniture. However if you truly want to get money out of stuff eBay is often a better option, fees included. You also have to consider that everyone knows what eBay is and the structured environment it provides. Not near as many people are familiar with craigslist.

Today's Featured Article - Madison's County - by Anthony West. Philip Madison has been a good friend of mine for quite some time. He has patiently suffered my incessant chit chat on the subject of tractors for longer than I care to remember, and on many occasions he has put himself out, dropped what ever it was he was doing, to come and lend a hand cranking handles, or loading a find onto a trailer. Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects. ... [Read Article]
