I've got the Ford sales literature books showing models vs arrangements which ultimately somewhat confuses me. Friend had a red/white 861 which was utility, gas large engine, 5 spd with live PTO. We had both a white 640 utility, gas small engine, 4 spd, non-live PTO and a red/white row crop 961 diesel large engine, 5 spd and live PTO. All agrees with the literature. Now the problems. In the fall 1958 we bought the 961, two row mounted picker and plow. It was an early diesel and didn't have the engine balancers. It failed when running the hay baler either the summer 1959 or 1960 and the dealer brought out a 901 for a temporary replacement. Know the 901 was all white, with a large gas engine. Reasonably sure it was a 5 spd and thought it had live PTO but now not quite so certain. The neighbor's tractor that I discussed on the other post was newer than the 961, likely a 1959 or possibly a 1960. As I stated it was a red/white, diesel utility with SOS and IPTO. Went for the bike ride and after considerable rehashing, have become somewhat convinced the decals said "901" rather than "801". Actually believe it was "901 Select O Speed". It definitely did not say 981 or 881. Since I'm not completely sure about replacement tractor's configuration, can only speculate it might not agree with the literature. However it appears the neighbor's tractor doesn't. Interested in any comments.
