U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced a final rule specifically prohibiting interstate truck and bus drivers from using hand-held cell phones while operating their vehicles.
Drivers who violate the restriction will face federal civil penalties of up to $2,750 for each offense and disqualification from operating a commercial motor vehicle for multiple offenses.
The States have three years to implement by State law the disqualification provision for intrastate drivers.
Q: What is the effective date of the Mobile Telephone rule? A: The effective date of the rule is January 3, 2012.
Q: Are wired or wireless earpieces allowed? A: Yes.
Q: Is Push-to-Talk allowed? A: No
Q: Is dialing a phone number allowed under this rule? A: No.
Q: Can a driver reach for a mobile telephone even if he/she intends to use the hands-free function? A: No

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
