My practical take on lithium ion batteries vs nimh vs nicad depends on the use of the devices. With nicads we all learned that occasional use ruins a battery in no time. The home user that uses a drill/driver really hard once every six months and keeps in in a drawer somewhere finds out his nicads are always dead when he needs them. It's almost as bad with nimh batteries. Both are made to use regularly and often. The memory effect is well known.
Lithium ion batteries are best known for long storage life, and for the most part, are at full power for the duration of the discharge cycle and recharging them doesn't take nearly as long.
I'll quit rambling, for the person who uses the device every day and needs big amp hour ratings, the nickel metal hydride batteries are really good. For the ones who use them occasionally, once a week or less, the lithium ion batteries will be a better choice in my opinion. I have several Panasonic drills, impact drivers, and even a circular saw for metal cutting, all with 14.4 volt lithium batteries that will stay up and ready to use for months at a time.

It was on his farm that I learned to use the combination hand clutch and brake on a John D
