.50 spotter round? The 105 recoiless rifle had for some models a .0 cal "spotter" round- it was a flash/incenderary bullet load with ballistics matched to the 105 projectile- Marine 4 and 6 recoilless rifle (ONOTOs?) light tracked anti tank rig had them mounted parellel to the recoilless guns- fire the .50 spotter and when you saw the "splash flash" on your target, fire a 105. Army had a single 105 on tripod mount with same .50 round, same drill- fire the spotter that didn"t have a big backblast to give away location and when on target fire the 105 recoiless-and maybe move quick as the opposition then has a big puff of smoketo locate you. Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
