I have my B-pressure ticket but I'd have to do a test to renew it. All different pressure tickets have to be renewed every 2 years even if you've been doing it for 40 years. In order to work as welder in Alberta you have to be either a registered apprentice or a journeyman. You do not have to have your red seal ticket though. Most journeyman pass the red seal test and have the red seal ticket though. Red seal means interprovincial and is recognized across Canada. The red seal test is strictly theory but was 50 questions longer than the standard journeyman test when I took it in the 80's. I got 91% on the red seal test and 89% on the NAIT test. Some of the questions are very difficult.

Alberta has lots of non union pressure welders. Union rates are higher for field welders than shop welders. For a non union shop position $38/hr is in the higher end of the pay scale. If I was real desperate for work, I think I'd try to land the job first and then discuss the wage rather than demand an aggressive wage from the get go. Most pressure shops require you to do a job test(s)anyway before being hired. For a vesssel or piping shop it's usually a rolled MIG root/7018 fill and cap bend test and a 6G 2 inch pipe 6010 root/7018 fill and cap bend test. If this guy had a bunch of TIG tickets and found a shop that required them, might justify the minimum wages he's looking for. The bigger question is why isn't he steadily employed making this wage or better if he's that good?

Today's Featured Article - Farmall 460: That's My Girl - by LeAnn R. Ralph. How many sounds can you think of that are as familiar to you as your own breathing? What about the hum of your refrigerator? Or the thump of your clothes dryer? Maybe the engine of your car? You hear those sounds every day, and you don't think much about them, do you. I can think of a few common, ordinary sounds in my daily life, too. ... [Read Article]
