Since I'm not the expert on these, maybe Puddles or someone else would know. I've been trying to figure out the year of my machine and I think have it narrowed down. Canadian serial numbers with an E were 1955 so it couldn't be a 55. Serial numbers with an L were 1960 and it could be that as long as the R57 idler was used then. Anyone know when the R57 came out? The shop thought it came out the same time long hoods did. No letters would be 1964 and it could be that but it has letters before the serial number. The serial number is EL 4333 but there is a smaller T in front of the the E, which I think might stand for Toronto? I picked it up today and noticed 5910 stamped on the top of barrel about 2 inches back from where the end plate is bolted on. Could that mean 10th month of 59? Canadian models don't use a code number as far as I know but I could be wrong. Serial numbers were consecutive on Can. models and over 269,000 were built from 1964 to 1989. They were built in canada even before then and I think after as well. I imagine US built models must be over a million units?
I have another question about welding cables. Is it better to just get new cable? It's hard to find used in good shape but the new is quite pricey. Any suggestions to find cheaper cables? Sorry for all the questions. Dave

Today's Featured Article - It Can't Be Done! - A Tractor Story - by Neil Campbell. I'll never forget the time back when I was a boy baling hay on our Farm in Big Rapid, Michigan. The most memorable event that took place was a trip up the steepest incline on the farm pulling an old New-Idea baler with a pony-motor for power and a haywagon. I had just talked my Dad into buying an old John Deere B with 6-speeds ahead and I was real proud of it, except it was a little smaller than the Case tractor that we normally ... [Read Article]
