If you have a 6 volt electrical system, you need a coil that has ~1.6 ohms primary resistance. Generally speaking it"s called a "6 Volt coil" and it needs no additional resistance. If you have a 12V Coil that says "12V use with an additional resistor" this is basically a 6V coil that requires a resistor IF IT IS USED IN A 12 V ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. Confused? A "real 12V coil" has ~3.2 ohms of prinmary resistance and does not need a resistor if used on a 12V system but it cannot be used on a 6 V system. It will generally have a label that just says "12V" and never mentions any reistor. So The easiest way to check the coil you have is to measure the resistance of the primary(measure between the two low voltage terminals on the coil). If it has a resistance of ~1.6 ohms you can use it on your 6 volt system. If it measures ~3.2 ohms, it won"t work on your 6 V system.

Today's Featured Article - Madison's County - by Anthony West. Philip Madison has been a good friend of mine for quite some time. He has patiently suffered my incessant chit chat on the subject of tractors for longer than I care to remember, and on many occasions he has put himself out, dropped what ever it was he was doing, to come and lend a hand cranking handles, or loading a find onto a trailer. Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects.
