I have been restoreing Farmall & I.H. tractors plus other types of tractors for at least ten yeans now. I have found out with International Harvester Caompany had made a system of Casting dates and numbers.I am refering to a book International Harvester Tractors Data Book on page 10 &11. Undarstandiing the numbers. On any givin tractor there ar at least four sets of numbers and identificatioon codes are an importance to the collector. 1. chassis serail number, 2.engine serail number, 3.parts numbers, 4.foundry casting date codes. In additional there may be other numbers found throught out the tractor such as supplier's parts numbers (for parts that where bought out of the I.H. factory) Numbers on parts indicating size and location.Engine and chassis numbers are not most fimilair to collectors. The chassie number is found on the metal plate. Parts numbers: Look for the casting date num, bers if you must this will tell you what year they where made and when. such as:YOu will find it starts out with a Letter (A41502ZA ) The first letter is a prefix the numbers are a part number, the last letters are your suffix. If you are missing a metal tag of serail number this isgoing to be hard to find this imformation. The serail numbers on tractor where not kept like cars. They where only made and put on the tractor from factory but never loged in to like a car. I should know this because I use to rrestore old cars and yes you are right about all the numbers. When I restore tractors I put in a number on the tractor in a spot where they can get to if the tractor is stolen. I call it my insurance number for those who own it and I tell them where it is located on there tractor. So it can be recovered. This is my ideal for many years and it does help in recovering the tractor. Remember there is no long on any of these munbers that say's this tractor is yours so put a number in a spot where you can find it that means that this is yours. I hoped I helped you out need any more please email me at bzappe@pacbell.net I will try to answer your questions Brent

Today's Featured Article - It Can't Be Done! - A Tractor Story - by Neil Campbell. I'll never forget the time back when I was a boy baling hay on our Farm in Big Rapid, Michigan. The most memorable event that took place was a trip up the steepest incline on the farm pulling an old New-Idea baler with a pony-motor for power and a haywagon. I had just talked my Dad into buying an old John Deere B with 6-speeds ahead and I was real proud of it, except it was a little smaller than the Case tractor that we normally
