Adjusting the sliding brush has no effect my question is could I have the brushes connected wrong? I have the wire that goes from the brush to the cutout connect to the sliding brush and the field wire connected to the other brush this looked like the way the wires came off but like I said it was apart when I got it. Any help will be appreciated.

I do not know what exact generator that you have, but I know 3 brush generators that came on Farmalls & Fords and you do not have your wired like they do. They are wired with the 3rd brush supplying the field, which to me makes sense, since that allows for an adjustable field current & thus an adjustable generator (armature) output. I would venture that you have it wired wrong. Back "in the day" as they say, Autolite was Ford's electric stuff. See lower right in dwg.
