Generally as you move from the early U (1939) to later models and on to the UB, transmission housings get heavier. Early U models had 1st & 3rd gear in opposite spots of post 1947 models. including G models, there were several axles, housings, bull gears, ring & pinions, constant mesh, etc. Some veteran builders can set you straight on the tranny specifics. Most guys prefer sitting on top and using a foot clutch, so the UB is more sought after. Generally, a mid forties U of the one piece block type is a good start. They are abundant, have faster gears, lighter castings, and cost less. Good start if you plan on installing a whole different engine. 450 cubes is a pretty standard do-it-yourself size requiring no sleeving, crank welding, extensive clearancing, etc. Also, bore and rebuild a 403 engine and with minimal work, it will bolt right in at 436 cubes. HD800 blocks are your next step up for the $$$....
