We supplied Lubbock with a accurate tapping of the block surface which we still have in our posession. The finished gasket as supplied hung over the bore and would not have sealed on the sleeve flange and torqued down would have interferred with the piston travel.
I do understand the drop on and torque theory with a gasket at moderate compression ratios but fire ring failure was a problem at the CR's that we like to run.
I must defend Doug in this matter, he is my friend, we have spent some time together at his farm looking his pulling iron over and talk at times via phone and he pulls with some of the best in his area and has a few trophys and ribbons. Please do not come down to hard on him as he just says what he thinks right out front, you never have to guess where he stands on an issue, that's not a bad thing.
