I like to use the "intent of the rule" approach to questions like this. While there is nothing specific in the rules that says you cannot run a longer/taller block in the open class, there is a factory HP limit for the light open classes 3500 and 3750. So, since an 88 sized tractor/block is not allowed to pull 3500 and 3750, I would apply the same logic to your situation. You cannot pull a 77 with an 88 sized block in 3500 or 3750 open.
