It doesn't protect from rust very well. Other than that it works fine if you are going to topcoat it with lacquer paint. If you are going to put anything else over lacquer primer it won't stick. Lacquer works by re-wetting the layer below. If you are wanting a cheap primer for oil based paint use and oil based primer. If you are wanting automotive finishes than prime with epoxy primer. Most automotive finishes are tailored to go over epoxy. Automotive finishes have gotten complicated so be sure to stick to one product line and get a data sheet on everything you use. Some of it you have to wait after you mix it before you use it and some of it has a time limit (recoat window) where you have to topcoat it or reprime it.
