Remembered I had some Stearns notes; there's a fair short history in the 1-2-77 GEM under Gile tractor notes and in a Practical Machinist article on Gile/Stearns that'll come up under Stearns Motor Co (Stearns was involved in Gile Eng/Boat Wks which became Stearns Motor)...Stearns (a timber/lumber baron) apparently quit engine business, closed factory, sold eqpmt 1930 or so. The engines had a reputation of being built heavier than most and"underrated" by the factory, consistently putting out higher power than rated. Eyeballed some old parts catalogs; only other EU listing so far is Baker 25-50 for 1927-28, but others may show up; I'd assume in marine use they'd be in working boats rather than sport or racing types like Erd. Huber catalog listings are contradictory and confused, but one lists the "1926-35 25-50, Super 4, 40-60 and 40-62....Stearns ER, EU and EU4" I have no idea if the ER is a modif or variant of the EU, or if the EU4 is actually another designation for the EU 4cyl; it's also possible these may've been options or production changes. I don't have the ER or the EU4 on my Stearns engine list, but none of my lists are complete. Looks like other Huber/Stearns owners are your best bet for info/parts/sympathy; can email a list of other tractors using other Stearns engines if you'd like (it wouldn't be very long!).. Bud
