To follow up, the shift lever ball end fits into slots milled into the brackets on the three shift rails. When mine jammed, the ball evidently rode up out of the slot and onto one of the brackets and jammed on top. I first measured the various dimensions of the ball and lever under the cover with a dial caliper and made a dimensioned drawing as a reference. Then I welded with gas MIG to lengthen and build up the corners of the ball. Probably added about 1/8". Started grinding to reshape with the corners of the ball a little less circular and a bit higher. Took a couple of re-installs to get the ball short enough to work smoothly. About 1/16" increase is all the system would tolerate without the ball jamming in the bottom of the slots. I know nothing more to try and trust that it will now be OK.

Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
