Thanks for replying John. Very interesting, looks like these Senators were indeed Gilson made. I guess the reverse spring is so you don't put too much pressure on the lever, or possibly to kick the tiller out of reverse if someone isn't holding the lever. (safety feature?) The idler to carb link rod was bent on mine too, but I was able to straighten it and reconnect the spring. It's a cheap part from B&S if you have to order one. The idler arm was out of adjustment badly on mine. Someone had left fuel in this tiller, so I had to thoroughly clean the carb and tank. I had a worn out bearing in the crankcase. Other than that I put a new gasket set on, new points/condensor, new plug/filter, new valve breather, and generally just cleaned and painted it. Runs literally like new now and I have tilled my garden with it twice. If I could find the right length of reverse belt and how to route it this tiller would be done. Does your owner's manual show the way the reverse belt is routed? I'll check around with the number of the belt you listed.

Thanks,

Eric

Today's Featured Article - Fire in the Field A hay fire is no laughing matter-well, maybe one was! And a good life-lesson, too. Following World War II many farm boys returned home both older and wiser. One such man was my employer the summer I was sixteen. He was a farmer by birth and a farmer by choice, and like many returning soldiers, he was our silent hero: without medals or decorations, but with a certain ability to survive. It was on his farm that I learned to use the combination hand clutch and brake on a John D ... [Read Article]
