Hi, Jim! If you take a careful look at the shift pattern, you'll notice that an Oliver tractor has actually two "quadrants" on the floor shifter. Each quadrant will have 2 slow and one faster and one reverse gear. The engine should be running and the clutch pedal depressed to move the shifter from one quadrant to the other. This does give the tractor 6 forward and 2 reverse gears. The 2 speed Hydra-Power and the 3 speed Hydraul-Shift shifters multiply the number of speeds respectively. Hydra-Power doubles the forward speeds to 12 and the Hydraul-Shift triples the forward speeds to 18! I was raised in Farmalls and we had the 656 model with the 5 speed and the TA. The advantage of my Oliver 1600 is that it has the 2 reverse speeds instead of just one like Dad's 656 had. Hydra-Power gives me 2 speeds in each reverse gear. My Oliver 1600 has a total of 12 speeds forward and 4 speeds reverse. That high reverse gear really saves time! Hope this helps, Don

To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
