If it's under the hood, the canister runs lays on top of the valve covers with the lid on the front. It makes clearance to the turbo and crossover complicated, and the AC compressor is in the way of actually removing the filter and getting it out from under the hood.
We converted a couple of them to front air cleaners, that usually involves notching to top tank of the radiator to get the air pipe up front, unless someone's put a later radiator in at some point.
Another solution is to put a 1855 air cleaner on it. They mount crossways, like this.
Some under hood 105's have had a vertical air cleaner kit installed, they originally drew air in from up front through the 2 layer hood design. Either way the 1855 air cleaner housing can be adapted so no hood modifications need to be done.

Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
