Yeah, after thinking on the input shaft issue, it must be wear that was caused by running a heavy load and shifting the o/u from under to direct. Picking up speed with 5 bottoms in the ground, maybe. I am worried the notches in the splines may cause slipping, not allowing the clutch to fully engage, but it didn't seem like direct was slipping at all before I pulled the unit from the tractor. I doubt that the damage was done over a short period of time, so maybe running it would be OK... for a while. Will probably replace most of the separator plates as a couple barely have any teeth left.
Definitely replacing the sprag and will look into cleaning up the output shaft as you suggested.

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
