I have welded one of those top ears and not had any more problems.I would replace the orings and seals that will leak outside.There are one on each end of the bottem shaft, easy to replace while the unit is out. Just push the shaft one way past the oring and dig it out.Allso the rear seal and the oring on the shifter rod.It can be hard to remove the rear nut.
