I can recall once a long time my 50 got stuck between gears when shifting. And like you said it would stall the engine if I tried to engage the clutch. Can't recall if I had to open it up to free the shifter but I don't think so.
Your pto could be stuck with a piece of the brake disk caught in the gears. When I took my pto off I found some badly chewed up pieces of the brake disk that had obviously caught in the gears but luckily without damaging them. I'd take the pto off yours at least and see whats going on inside there.
