The original 77's & 88's used a muffler that was completely under the hood, only a small pipe sticking up from there. Many have been converted to the later type (as used on the Super 77 and Super 88, which required cutting the hole in the hood a little larger, because the pipe comes out slightly off from where it did originally. So maybe you are looking for a Super 77 style, I would think this would be easy to find. It may not be black, but you could paint it with heat resistant paint if you can't find it that way. I have tried to find a picture of one that had the large part of the muffler partially in the hood, but I can't find one like that, but all of them have the inlet and clamp below the hood. Maybe that's what you're remembering.
