Drive shaft just slips over splines at differential and at transmission and splitting will disconnect on end or the other, but it doesn't matter. Since it doesn't need to be removed if you do the grinding approach. With the twisted end of PTO shaft looking at you, you grind off the splines so that the smooth shaft will slip back through the pump.
