Time for another lecture.Heres what you should have done in the beginning.Crank engine with ignition on, watch ammeter. It should flick from 0 to 4 amps discharge if the points are opening and closing.Steady 4 amp discharge says theres a short in the distributor or points. No discharge says bad ignition switch, broken wire, open coil, dirty points or you forgot to turn the key on.Hobo doesnt understand this method so he laughs at it.Notice you dont need a meter or test light. Now put a bit of paper between the contacts and see if you still have a 4 amp discharge.Still there, bad point insulator or short were the power comes into the distributor.Very common on the front mount distributor, not so much on the side mount.Notice we have no tools or voltmeters yet.If you had an ohmmeter you could have checked the points on the bench by opening and closing the points by hand and watching the meter. No need to try another set of points or switch points from another tractor. If you had turned the ignition on and opened and closed the points by hand you would have seen that there was no spark when the points open or close IF the points were shorted. In a working ignition you will get a shock from the points. Why, theres over 200 volts of inductive voltage present when the points open.A lot more than 6 or 12 volts.END of lecture.
