Royce, the ONLY thing that moves the fork/control fwd/lift is a spring between fork & bottom front of cylinder. Moving the touch control lever simply moves an eccentric out of the way so that the spring can pull forks fwd. If in prying, you were low enough on the forks to actually move the valve forward/lift, then I expect that a passage is plugged in/around intake or pump is broken. Note that the fork hinges at about mid length & if you pried above the hinge, that was ineffective in moving the valve.
