Red, Blue, Green, Purple. Uncle went to Purple for everything around 1962. Trouble was, the cheapest way to increase octane of gasoline is to add tetraethyl lead to it and that's exactly what the contractors did. Fuel had so much lead in it that it would solder sparkplug electrodes together. Necessity being the mother of invention, TCP (Tomcatpiss) came along. Carried that TCP along with us. You're right about the "smoke of choice". Guys used to fill up their cigar lighters with the purple stuff when draining sumps. You could tell who the aircrews were at the club when they lit their stogies with a flame thrower.
