I don't know about that specific gear box, but I think you guessed well with what you got. One thing I would do is catch the oil you drain out and play in it and "sniff" it to determine if it is the heavy gear oil one would expect in a gear box. If the "old oil" was less viscous than 80/90 gear oil you may want to reconsider what to replace it with. My theory is, however, any reasonable and clean lubricant is better than no (or contaminated) lubricant when dealing with gears and bearings.
