I've had a dozen guys say they would definately take something, and beg me to hold it, only to never show up, or to turn up and try to bargain, for every one who has ever told me they'd hold something, and not. So while it is irritating when they do, I can't really blame them. Legally, a promise to hold something is worthless if there has not been consideration - no money has changed hands. So I have on occasion, when I could not arrange transport, driven an hour or two just to leave a deposit to hold it. One neat trick you can often do these days is offer to paypal a deposit - it' gets the money to them instantaneous and gives proof of your good intentions, as well as legally binding the recipient.
