Seems to be two schools of option on the original red color of 8N series tractors. Vermillion red and NH red. Research proves that both are correct. At some point in time in the 50's Ford Dearborn tractor division changed the color from deep blue red to the vermillion orange red.
Vermillion red has a yellow dye proved by spectrum analysis which gives it an orange appearance.
NH red has no yellow but contains blue dye proved by spectrun analysis which appears a deep red with no orange.
Therefore, Vermillion red is on the yellow side of true red while NH red is on on blue side of true red.
True orange is 50% true yellow and 50% true red which are primary colors.
Removing the lower cup on the air filter of a 49N shows the red color paint on the inside surface that was not exposed to UV is not an orange red but rather a deep blue red as proved by spectrum analysis. NH red is the best match to this original color.
There two red colors sold at the New Holland dealership. 1. M1J-956 which contains 9% yellow, 62% violet,20% red 2. 70780DS which contains 0% yellow, 79% violet, 25% red where violet is between red and blue. The M1J-956 appears orange red tinted. The 70780DS is a blue red and does not appear orange red.
Valspar makes a NH red market with the label tractor and implement enamel which is 76% violet, 23% red, 0% yellow
Valspar also makes a IH red under the same label which is 73% violet and 25% red, 0% yellow
The Valspar NH red appears more blue red than the IH red.
Valspar also makes Ford red with the same label which is 28% yellow, 57% violet, 14% red. This paint apears more orange then the New Holland M1J-956 red
Van Sickle out of Omaha, NE makes a vermillion red and NH red alkyd paint.
Rustoleum makes a genral purpose spray paint with the color name "sunrise red", which quite popular probably since it is low cost. The color is 24% yellow, 62% violet, 14% red
Rustoleum also makes a general purpose low cost spray paint with the color name "regal red". The color is 2% yellow, 81% violet, 16% red These two genral purpose oil based spray paints can be purchased at Walmart at less than $4/can.
I know the % of dye tint on over 35 red colored oil based alkyd spray paint products based on spectrum analysis on a paint chip analayzer that with an accurancy of 384 parts / oz of dye.

Today's Featured Article - Madison's County - by Anthony West. Philip Madison has been a good friend of mine for quite some time. He has patiently suffered my incessant chit chat on the subject of tractors for longer than I care to remember, and on many occasions he has put himself out, dropped what ever it was he was doing, to come and lend a hand cranking handles, or loading a find onto a trailer. Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects.
