Certainly something to keep in mind when comparison shopping for winches. A quick check of the Ramsey site confirms that rating system and also tells me that their 8K rated winch has an actual line pull of 6.7K at two layers, 5.7K at 3 layers , and 5K when the spool is full at 4 layers.
I'm also thinking that a simple snatch block on the cable halves the reach but doubles the pull - true for any pulley system. So if I spool out half my line and run it through a snatch block and back to the winch I'll get an actual line pull of 6.7K x 2 = 13.4K at my block. The more line I spool out the more pull I get.
