David.......would it surprize you to learn the wire to the top of the squarecan dizzy should NOT be HOT? Iff'n the wire is HOT, that generally means the POINTS are CLOSED and drawing MAX CURRENT. It takes about 1-hr to melt the insulative tar in the squarecan coil, but it don't take long to melt the points rubbing block. And iff'n the rubbing block melts, guess what??? the points are permanently closed. Remember, you only gitt sparkies when the points OPEN. Ittza LAW. Electro-magnetic Law.
Remind yer neighbor, ittza 2-bolt, 15-min job to remove the weird 4-nipple frontmount dizzy and change and adjust the points (0.015") on the kitchen table. Just un-snapple the capple and letter dangle. Installation is a reversal of the removal ...except... finger start the 2-bolts and then install the rotor. Rotate the rotor until the OFF-SET tang drops into the camshaft OFF-SET slot. Now tighten yer 2-bolts and re-snapple yer capple. Simple, eh? ........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
