Mike.......2-hrs of running and then "backfiring" is almost always weak sparkies from yer 4-nipple frontmount squarecan ignition coil. It takes about 1-hr before the internal insulative tar melts and shorts out some windings causing weak sparkies and backfiring. Do I haffta tell you to replace yer uncles squarecan ignition coil???
Caution; there are 2-versions of the squarecan ignition coil. The original 6V-coil and modern 12V-coil. Unfortunately, you can NOT tell the difference by looking at them. You haffta read the lable on the box.
Since yer uncles tractor is a successful 12V conversion with alternator using a 12-to-6V converting resistor. I'd gitt the 6V-coil. Understand? And yes, either squarecan coil needs the "infamous ballast resistor". .......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
