Just as Jim said, it takes mechanical knowledge and common sense. Understanding clearances, tolerances, torque specs, etc. all have to be understood and adhered to. A good manual will give you step by step instructions for a quality rebuild as long as you don't cut corners. The little things that you may take for granted will always come back and cause problems for you.
Proper tools. Quality parts. Understanding and adhereing to specs. Keep everything surgical clean.
As for time. Be patient. Read, understand and most important...follow what you read to the "T" and it'll be hard to go wrong.
