$9.98 Motor Overhaul Follow-up

Posted by Bob on May 18, 1999 at 11:37:18:

Well, I got about 4 hours out of my 8N this
weekend, before the latest break down occured.
When running I noticed that steam was starting
to come out of somewhere by the bottom of the
radiator. So I shut it down, let it cool off
and opened up the radiator cap. Lo and behold,
there was no water, plus there were signs of
oil in the radiator. I added water and tried
to re-start, without any luck. After checking
a few things, I noticed that there was water
running out of the carb intake. Starting was impossible. I'm hoping its just a blown head
gasket, and not a cracked block.

I had some time to take the head off last night,
and man oh man, what an oily, wet, cruded up
sight... no wonder it bearly ran. I'll probably
end up pulling the whole block out and doing a
real rebuild on the motor. The head gasket looked
to be in bad shape, but I can't say for sure
that it was blown.

My next feat will be to try and get that block out
of there -- I'm hoping its not too hard, as I
still have the front end loader on. I don't really want to take that monster off too. A
cherry picker isn't tall enough to lift it over
the loader frame rails, so I might try sliding
it out from below on its side, after lowering
it with a come-along.

PS. pushing the beast back into my garage was
no fun while my wife (tried) steered. Luckily,
I was able to use my truck to pull it out of
the woods.

All for now,
Bob

Today's Featured Article - Madison's County - by Anthony West. Philip Madison has been a good friend of mine for quite some time. He has patiently suffered my incessant chit chat on the subject of tractors for longer than I care to remember, and on many occasions he has put himself out, dropped what ever it was he was doing, to come and lend a hand cranking handles, or loading a find onto a trailer. Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects. ... [Read Article]
