These single wire alternators are simple with one catch. You hook the wire to the battery positive and make sure the alternator case is grounded, then you need to rev the engine up to get it to come online (that's the catch). Your voltmeter should show you charge voltage of 13.8 v nominal with good revs of about 800 to 1000. Ensure that the battery cables are good too.
