I had good luck cleaning the sump of my 50 sidemount when I replaced the lift piston; it was a lot easier to flush it out & remove the sludge w/ the top cover off than trying to do it thru the side covers. I"d say I got 95% of it that way. Dropping the pump will allow you to get it all; if you do that, replace the PTO seal while you"re there. I would not fool w/ the pump itself.
