I reposted because I replied out of order. I did order a replacement valve assembly, but..... As an interim to get some use out of the tractor this weekend. Today I cleaned the threads on the all-thread pipe and installed the valve assembly; careful to turn the discharge side of the valve downwards. I then removed the cover holding the dipstick. After observing the rubber washer and valve connection I felt that everything seemed fine, so I put the cover back on. I left the acorn nut off the side of the tractor so that I could see it operate when the lift was operational. I then cranked the tractor. I left the draft lever in the vertical position, and actated the control valve up and down. The lift came up and down just fine. I then threw the draft lever to the horizontal position. As I moved the control valve out of the up position, the arms started down. At this point, everything seemed fine. However..... I went and hooked to a small disk. The lift wouldnt lift the disk off the ground. I tried the draft control, and multiple configurations of the control valve with the draft control valve. Prior to this point, I checked the adjustments for the control valve (to the best of my ability) and I made no changes, because they appeared to be in spec. I changed the o-rings on the piston, upper cap assembly, and the upper seal above the piston housing. I checked the pin that prevents the cylinder from coming out too far, and it appeared ok. Also, I took out the unloading valve and replaced the o-ring on it. I went to Napa, a couple of weeks ago, to buy hydraulic fluid. I dont know the viscosity of the fluid; but is is more the consistancy of motor oil than gear oil. I know the pump is working fine because it has been consitantly blowing the cylinder housing upper gasket, but I replaced it last weekend, and I rechecked it today before I put everything back on. Any recomendations. Thanks, Wayne

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
