Like a couple of posts said, take the top cover off and take the PTO lever side cover off. You may have your hydraulic position control lever out of adjustment and that could be preventing the pump from sliding into the correct position. Once the top is off, make sure the pump and its mounting plate are flush with the bottom of the tractor and nudge it forward. I had it off and on a couple of 8ns and, while snug, I've always been able to do it by hand.
