Well, Actually you have to get the crank out of the engine and it only comes out the rear of the block. So by then you have the jugs and pistons off and its a dandy time to think about rings and crank bearings. Then you have to get the front main bearing race off the crank and then pull the gear.
When I did it to my '48 RTU I used a gear from a ZT/RE engine.
